Do Dragons Take Maidens? E-mail

This question is from John W. via the internet:

Q: Do dragons take maidens captive or is that a stereotype? If they do, what do they do with them?

A: It is, in fact, a stereotype that dragons take maidens captive. There have been many a village throughout history that believed offering a maiden would "appease" a local dragon enough to avoid damage.

Even into modern times, many small towns (mostly European) continue to offer maidens to local dragons as some sort of offering or sacrifice. This puts dragons in a quandry, however. Dragons haven't the facilities or the means by which to provide for these forsaken women. This has led several tribes to band into a coalition against maiden abandonment which works to rehabilitate and relocate them.
